Litigation Finance: a Symposium at NYU

On November 20th, the Center on Civil Justice at NYU School of Law will be hosting an in-depth conference dedicated to the subject of litigation finance, Litigation Funding: The Basics and Beyond.  It is a great opportunity for those interested in the topic to learn more and interact with some of the people that are currently shaping the industry.

The event is free of charge and you can register here (and you can even get CLE credit). Here are the details:

November 20, 2015

8:45 a.m. –  5:00 p.m.

Lipton Hall, D’Agostino Hall

108 West Third Street

NYU School of Law

I am excited to be a contributor to the conference, where I will be presenting a paper entitled A Financial Perspective on Commercial Litigation Finance. (I am slotted to present in the first panel for those interested.) I will be examining: (i) how a company can benefit from transferring the risk associated with an investment in a legal claim, (ii) why an entity holding a portfolio of legal claims is more capable of bearing and managing such risk, and (iii) why litigation financiers are well suited to aggregate portfolios of legal claims.

The presentation will explore how the redistribution of risk to the party that is most willing and able to bear it allows companies to more efficiently allocate capital resources to their highest and best use, permitting companies to invest in projects that optimize returns and promote general economic growth.

There are a variety of great presentations on the docket: topics range from the evolution of litigation finance in the United States to subcategories of funding, and regulation of the industry. You can see the full line-up here.

Hope to see you there!
